Businesses around the world have recognized the benefits of AI for IT. A Narrative Science and the National Business Research Institute survey showed that 61% of companies surveyed, adopted AI in 2018. That same survey showed that the number had increased dramatically in comparison to 2017, when adoption stood at only 38%. The latest reports by McKinsey and IBM show that AI adoption is continuing at a steady pace. Both reports show that a majority of companies have now adopted AI in some shape or form.

As evidenced by these studies, the disruptive nature of AI seems to be impacting most organizations , if not all. However, what potential does AI actually hold for businesses at large? Is it simply a tool to sift through data or automate repetitive tasks? Or does it hold promise to revolutionize business and every other facet of life as science fiction has told us?

Perhaps that question is a bit too broad for this article, but we can surely focus on how AI can benefit IT.

Top 10 Benefits of AI For Enterprise IT

10 benefits of AI for IT businesses

1.   Data Driven Decision Making

AI primarily makes use of relevant data to improve workflow processes, and decision making. The more quality data there is, the better the decisions are; at least in theory. AI uses data to make the best decisions possible, as well as suggest the most optimal options for human decision-making.

For example, Google Maps suggests the best routes to your destination depending on current traffic flow, distance, and disruptions. The Amazon marketplace suggests purchases based on your own buying history,  and healthcare technology can now make suggestions to doctors for more accurate diagnosis.

AI similarly serves as a tool to suggest the best solutions to problems, whether they’re software related or not. A cross referencing of time, effort, cost, risk and implementation difficulty can, in theory, suggest the most viable solution.

Quantifying different metrics aside, AI can pave a path to the most optimal solutions for any IT or business-related problem, spanning across security, stability, productivity and compliance.

2.   Automating Repetitive Tasks

AI is perhaps most famous for the resulting automation. Most people think of robots or assembly lines when they hear the word AI. However, automating tasks like data entry, data replication, transfers, and alerts is key to the smooth workflow in IT departments.

This doesn’t just lead to higher productivity and efficiency, but also greater service delivery overall. . Less time is wasted on unproductive tasks which yield no greater value to the company. Human labor and ingenuity can instead be allocated to more creative endeavors.

3.   Improving Customer Experience

How can AI help someone in IT? How about delivering the right solutions at the right time; and the right solutions to simple IT problems? Besides “turning your computer off and on again”, there are a multitude of simple solutions to everyday IT problems. AI provides the ability to better meet changing requirements and expectations with the agility demanded.  As an example, AI can use data lakes to analyze and correlate data, derive solutions and present them to customers 24/7. Thereby improving the customer experience and increasing customer satisfaction.

4.   Better Talent Management

IT departments are pools of talent including software developers, security professionals, data scientists, reliability  engineers, change managers etc. AI can be a great tool to manage that talent more efficiently in order to improve project turnover. AI enabled processes don’t just save company hiring costs, but also impact workforce productivity.

This is done by efficiently sourcing and screening top tier candidates. Through AI, this process can become more and more algorithmic rather than manual and time consuming.

5.   Better Data Analysis and Modeling

AI is known for its predictive modeling and analytical advantages. It can be used to analyze data more efficiently than older and manual techniques. These models aren’t just good for solving business problems, but also for detecting anomalies, exposing problems, and suggesting IT solutions.

AI can plunder gathered data to find patterns, to identify hardware issues, or bugs and viruses which can go undetected. It can correlate data against other data to understand differences, detect risk, even proactively help IT prevent issues.

That’s what AI does. It can speed up data processing and analysis by orders of magnitude faster than any human processing. Using data, AI can look for relationships between different variables and factors that humans are not even yet aware of. In fact, it can also do this without introducing the biases that a human mind might have.

6.   Solving Complex Problems

AI, specifically with the development of deep  neural networks and machine learning, has become adept at solving complex problems. GPUs and TPUs have excelled at finding millions to billions of adjustable parameters within data to understand and predict patterns.

What all that basically means is that more and more complex problems have become solvable through AI. The myriad connections which modern techniques can find within gathered data can be used to solve all sorts of complex problems across your enterprise today.

Everything from technical diagnostics to speedy root cause analysis and disaster recovery can be achieved through AI powered data analysis.

7.   Smooth Management of Everyday Tasks

Recurring tasks (some may call this toil) are unfortunately part of any job, but making sure they are done is essential to a business’ functionality. Robotic process automation by AI tools can automate interaction between business systems and make tedious work manageable. While AI can’t completely reproduce all human tasks, simple and repetitive tasks are its specialty. This is one of the greatest benefits of AI for IT.

Whether it’s the IT department, the HR department, or Marketing, many basic tasks can be programmed. Sending emails, identifying bugs, detecting unauthorized changes to configuration, or sifting through CVs and parsing important details are all easily doable through AI.

8.   Continuity in Business

AI can often help in making critical decisions for businesses. This can range from replacing crucial infrastructure, installing new software, or blocking preemptive cyber attacks. These decisions are fundamental when ensuring continuity in business.

AI is the perfect tool to handle such tasks and to stave off potential P1s or disasters.  From detecting file integrity, ensuring server consistency, environmental drift or even certificate expirations, identifying business vulnerabilities can be automated through AI to ensure that your business does not get disrupted by an unexpected outage.

9.   Efficiency Optimization

Business efficiency is a welcome result of investing in artificial intelligence. Reducing mistakes, improving efficiency, and ensuring continuity results in less downtime and greater service availability. This is not only true of end-user applications, but in-house applications for employees and executives.

AI tools don’t bore you with  repetitive tasks. Hence, once a system is built to adequately handle those tasks, it will carry on, given the appropriate resources. Of course, maintenance and troubleshooting will be required, but the lion’s share of work will be automated.

10.   Error Minimization

One amazing benefit of automation is the minimization of errors. Often in businesses, there is necessary replication of data, or certain repetitive tasks that need to be performed. These types of tasks, among others, can often be plagued by human error.

Using AI and machine learning to automate these tasks reduces the occurrence of error. It can also help make systems more efficient by reducing or even removing the need for error correction.

Important Things to Remember When Implementing AI for IT

Remember that AI is a tool like any other technology. It’s not a magic pill which can solve all manner of problems for your business. You need to understand your business needs before implementation and recognize what will serve you best. AI holds a goldmine of potential for IT departments for all businesses around the world. If data is leveraged correctly, AI can benefit all businesses and industries alike.
